The Municipality of Kujalleq has decided to issue 50 new taxi licenses. The decision was made at an extraordinary meeting of the municipal council on Friday, March 20.

The number of licenses is determined by population, with 10 licenses per 1,000 inhabitants. This means that 30 licenses can be given in Qaqortoq and 10 in Narsaq and Nanortalik, respectively.

- It will be assessed each year whether the number of taxi licenses is too high or too low. In connection with the upcoming airport in Qaqortoq, an increased need for taxis is expected, and therefore the number has been set as it is now, says Mayor Malene Vahl Rasmussen in a press release on the municipality's website.

At the same time, the municipality is working to update the current bylaw for the taxi area, which came into force in November 2023.

Bylaws need to be updated

According to the municipality, the rules have not been followed sufficiently, and therefore a clean-up effort has now been initiated in collaboration with the industry.

- We have learned that the bylaw, which came into force in November 2023, has not been followed sufficiently. Therefore, the administration is in the process of cleaning up the area in close collaboration with the taxi operators to create better order. In addition, we have held a meeting with the industry with a view to improving and updating the bylaws, which is expected to happen during the summer, explains municipal director Randi Vestergaard Evaldsen and continues:

- When the updated rules are ready after the summer, they will be sent for consultation among the taxi industry. We are committed to not creating unnecessary barriers for business owners, and we are therefore pleased with the large turnout for our invitation. It is important for us to ensure that citizens can safely use taxis and that the bylaws are continuously complied with.

In this regard, the municipality has been in dialogue with taxi drivers in Qaqortoq at a meeting on March 26, where both the administration and politicians participated.
