The residents of Siorapaluk have for a long time had to buy frozen foods that have exceeded their sell-by date, but are still on sale.
In a press release, a member of the municipal council of Avannaata Municipality, together with members of the settlement councils in Siorapaluk and Savissivik, stated that they have contacted Pilersuisoq with a view to finding a solution.
The elected officials are concerned about the situation and that the population has to live under these conditions.
Residents of Siorapaluk concerned
Patdloq Hendriksen, who lives in Siorapaluk, tells AG that the problem is not new and that the situation has always been like this.
– For a long time, expired goods have been in the store, and they have been sold at a small discount – sometimes without a discount – and in the end, the goods are just thrown away, says Patdloq Hendriksen.
Patdloq Hendriksen hopes that a solution will be found to the problem of expired frozen goods in Siorapaluk Pilersuisoq.
– It is a shame that goods are thrown away. They could be sold on offer instead. If they were sold at a reduced price, they would not just be thrown away, and that would benefit both us and Pilersuisoq, says Patdloq Hendriksen.
Elected officials want action
Elected officials have found that frozen goods that are too old are being sold, and in a press release they call on Pilersuisoq to react as soon as possible.
– We kindly but strongly ask Pilersuisoq, our only supplier of food, to arrange for an extraordinary purchase of emergency relief goods, write Ujuut Olsen (S), Naduk N. Kristensen (S) and Maassannguaq Oshima (S).
Ujuut Olsen, member of the municipal council of Avannaata Kommunia, adds that it is important that citizens have access to healthy food and the opportunity to buy it.
– We have become accustomed to buying food that has expired for several months. We are concerned about health when it comes to frozen food that has expired for several months. If Siorapaluk was in the southern part of the country, there would certainly be massive criticism of selling goods that have expired for several months, says Ujuut Olsen.
AG has attempted to obtain a comment from Pilersuisoq regarding the sale of expired frozen goods in Siorapaluk and how the problem will be resolved. The company has not returned a call by the time the editorial board published the article.
