Today, March 21, marks the one year anniversary of an unusual export success.
What started as a distribution of 200 caps in Sisimiut has grown in 12 months into a global movement that has found its way to everything from The Economic Times to the talk show The Daily Show.
The red “Make America Go Away” cap is a pun on US President Donald Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again.”
In a press release, the brand 55 Style, which produces anti-MAGA caps, writes that the broad international support has shown them something important:
- That individuals and civil society speak their own language across government policy and algorithms, says the team behind C55.
Marking resistance to American wishes
Since their launch, the "Make America Go Away" caps have sparked debate from Nuuk to New York.
C55 writes that the purpose from the start was to mark resistance to American wishes to take over Greenland. Interest has spread far beyond the EU; countries such as Canada, the UK, Australia, the Philippines and Thailand have signed on.
In line with the success, copycats have appeared on platforms such as Temu and Etsy, but C55 sees it as a green light for the cause.
- We don't see it as a fight against others, but as a growing movement. The more caps, the stronger the message. We have chosen to focus on quality materials, European production, and Danish design that lasts – just as our message that the USA should keep the teddy bears from Greenland also lasts, the team explains.
