There is unrest regarding the children and disability area in the Municipality of Kujalleq.
The Municipality of Naalakkersuisut suspended the municipality's management of the area back in November 2024, and the municipality now emphasizes on its website that it is exclusively Naalakkersuisut that makes decisions in the area.
According to the municipality, some of the municipality's citizens are experiencing frustrations in relation to cases concerning children and young people and people with disabilities:
- We have great understanding for these frustrations and the uncertainty and unhappy situation that these affected citizens find themselves in. However, it is important for us to make it very clear that the Municipality of Kujalleq has been suspended in these areas since November 2024, writes the municipality.
- All decisions are made sovereignly by Naalakkersuisut
The municipality emphasizes that it is Naalakkersuisut that is in charge of the area:
"The responsibility for these areas currently lies with Naalakkersuisut. This means that all decisions regarding these areas are made sovereignly by Naalakkersuisut, the Ministry of Children, Youth, Families, Internal Affairs, Education, Culture, Sports and Church."
"The Municipality of Kujalleq has no influence on how cases are processed or what decisions are made."
Mayor Malene Vahl Rasmussen writes in a statement about the situation that it is crucial that the suspended area is returned to the municipality as soon as possible, but only when the conditions for the suspension are no longer present.
"To achieve this goal, close and constructive cooperation is absolutely central. The municipality must therefore be involved in the entire process regarding the suspended area," the mayor writes and continues:
"It would be neither appropriate nor practically possible for the Municipality of Kujalleq to take over the area again from one day to the next."
The municipal director issued harsh criticism
The matter came into focus when the municipal director of the Municipality of Kujalleq, Randi Vestergaard Evaldsen, issued harsh criticism of Naalakkersuisut's handling of the suspended area in March.
According to the director, the handling is characterized by a lack of structure, lack of documentation and insufficient coordination, which according to the municipal director has created insecurity and dissatisfaction among affected citizens in the municipality.
Naalakkersuisoq Nivi Olsen (D) has spoken out against the municipal director and announced that, in her opinion, structure has been created and the suspended area has been cleaned up.
Nivi Olsen also said in this connection that she wanted a constructive dialogue with the municipality about the matter. Malene Vahl Rasmussen takes note of this request.
