Should iPads be used in Avannaata Municipality's schools? That is the disagreement between the mayor, Lars Erik Gabrielsen (S), and the members of the Committee for Culture, School and Preschool.

The minutes from the regular meeting of the municipal council on March 27th state that the mayor wants to stop the use of iPads in all the municipality's primary schools.

- The mayor wants iPads to be phased out in schools, the minutes state.

Rejected

The mayor's wish to abolish iPads was not only considered a good idea by municipal officials. The administration recommended to the committee that the matter should first be investigated.

- The iPad is one of the tools that can be used in teaching. A phasing out of iPads may have a number of consequences that it is important to be aware of. Against this background, it is assessed that it would be appropriate to have Rambøll conduct a new study based on the previous studies, which is independent of the initiative, writes the administration.

The administration's recommendation to investigate the possibility of abolishing iPads was approved by both the education committee and ultimately by the municipal council.

A study must be carried out

The work on the mayor's request will continue as follows:

- A more detailed analysis of a phasing out of iPads in schools must be carried out in close cooperation with Kivitsisa's steering group and all other relevant parties.

- The process must be carried out in cooperation with the administration, school management, teachers, parent representatives and, not least, the children and young people.
