Earlier this week, Sermitsiaq wrote about a man who allegedly comes from the USA and wants to collect signatures in Nuuk. The man wants people he meets to sign that they accept that Greenland becomes part of the USA. Those who sign are reportedly offered $200,000, Sermitsiaq's sources say.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greenland strongly disapproves of this.
- It should not be necessary to repeat that Greenland and the Greenlandic people can never ever be bought.
- Even if it is only the action of one individual, or if it were to come from a nation, such behavior cannot be accepted. That one could become the owner of a country by simply offering people money, says Múte B. Egede (IA) to Sermitsiaq.
Naalakkersuisoq: It's about our future
On social media, you can see that the incident is perceived as something funny in some places. Naalakkersuisoq does not see it that way:
- It must not be made into a joke. It's about our future and our country.
Sermitsiaq asked Naalakkersuisoq whether he has acted or will act in the case. But he referred to the police, as they are handling the case.
- The police are working on the case, and Naalakkersuisut is calm about it, says Múte B. Egede.
It could happen again
Naalakkersuisoq's Foreign Affairs Department does not rule out that something similar could happen again. Therefore, he urges citizens:
- We must be aware that something like this could happen again, and I would urge Greenlanders to immediately report anyone who acts in this way to the relevant authorities.
- We must clearly show that we in no way accept people who behave in this way, says Múte B. Egede.
The Greenland Police confirmed to Sermitsiaq on Thursday that they are working on the case.
