It is clear that Inuit Ataqatigiit has had a festive evening when you call the chairman this morning. Múte B. Egede has a hoarse voice.
– If my voice sounds a little strange, it is because I shouted a lot yesterday. I am not otherwise sick, says Múte B. Egede with a laugh.
Inuit Ataqatigiit will retain its mandate in the Folketing. In the 2022 general election, the party became the second largest, while Siumut was the largest. Now Inuit Ataqatigiit is again the largest party, and the chairman is pleased.
– I am happy and proud of our party's stability in the work in the Folketing, but also in our national political work. We have held firm, and I am proud that our work has so much trust. But I would also say that it is a great commitment.
A victory that cannot be ignored
The Inuit Ataqatigiit party in Nuuk on Tuesday was significantly livelier than at the Inatsisartut election last year. Back then, the atmosphere was more subdued, when the party became the third largest.
How will you use your position now?
– First of all, it is about the Folketing, and with our position as the largest party, we have the best possible starting point for working to improve the conditions of the population – of course together with the other elected members.
– But we also cannot ignore our further work at the national level, when we have such great support.
Naaja steps down as Naalakkersuisoq: – We have a plan
Naaja H. Nathanielsen's decision to run for the Folketing while she was Naalakkersuisoq has sparked criticism and debate. Now she is stepping down and traveling to Denmark.
– We have had a plan from the start. Since Naaja decided to run, we have been preparing ourselves: If it happens, we will do this.
Do you already have a specific person in mind?
– We have a direction, and our executive board will decide on it in the coming time. Then we will move on from there.
Múte B. Egede says that the new member of the Folketing will travel to Denmark as soon as possible. But first there are tasks that need to be solved here in Greenland.
– Today we are planning internal meetings in the party, but also meetings with the elected parties and with the parties that were not elected, he says.
It is still difficult to predict who will form the government in Denmark.
– The situation is very mixed, and the votes are widely spread. Therefore, it seems that it will be difficult to form a majority on one side or the other. Our task is to ensure that it does not have a negative impact on our country, concludes Múte B. Egede.
