The opposition parties in Qeqqata Municipality hold the majority after Gideon Lyberth (S) left the cooperation coalition in the municipal council earlier this week.
Naleraq, Demokraatit and Atassut as well as independent Gideon Lyberth have 8 members, while the coalition parties Siumut and Inuit Ataqatigiit with Mayor Malik Berthelsen (S) have 7.
The opposition parties have now prepared and signed a cooperation agreement that will be valid for the next three years – i.e. until the next municipal election in 2028.
The parties will particularly focus on initiatives in the areas of children, the elderly, social and disability, leisure and business.
Committee to ensure flow in business
Two major projects may well be launched in Qeqqata Municipality soon. These are the possibilities of hydroelectric power plants at Tasersuaq and Tasersiaq. For this reason, the opposition will establish another committee in the municipal council. The committee will create a clear framework and focus on development opportunities for business in the municipality. This should be taken up as a proposal for the next municipal council meeting.
- The Self-Government has, in collaboration with large companies, project plans for Tasersuaq and Tasersiaq, and Qeqqata Kommunia should not be just an observer on the sidelines. The partners will as soon as possible make a demand on the Self-Government so that the municipality can be involved in the projects. The projects are planned to be located in areas that have cultural and supply significance for the municipality, the parties write.
More constructions must be planned
In addition to businesses, Naleraq, Demokraatit, Atassut and the independent will work to develop leisure activities for young people to ensure less emigration from the municipality. At the same time, initiates should be initiated to ensure better service for people with disabilities and the elderly, especially in the form of housing collectives and more courses and up-skilling offers for staff.
But the parties also want to improve the primary school and daycare, for which the municipality is also responsible.
- Construction of daycare institutions to replace the older buildings must be initiated as soon as possible, and must be prioritized according to need in the residential areas, it says.
At the same time, the parties will work to open up the possibility of decentralized education within pedagogy to ensure that staff can stay in the home during the education.
Among several initiatives that the parties will work for, it says that waste management must be improved in the municipality, and that the municipality must develop waste sorting in collaboration with ESANI.
Several areas of work mentioned in the new cooperation agreement also appear in the coalition agreement that Siumut and Inuit Ataqatigiit have drawn up in 2025. This applies in particular to housing and the staff situation in various sectors.
