Siumut demands clarity: Was the exercise war preparations?

New information about Danish military activities in Greenland in January 2026 raises serious questions about the handling of the situation and the information that has been given to the Greenlandic population, Siumut believes.

On Thursday, DR reported that Denmark in January was preparing for a possible American attack on Greenland, and Danish soldiers who were flown to Greenland brought, among other things, explosives to destroy runways in Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq to stop a possible American attack.

DR has written the article based on sources in the Danish government, top officers as well as high-ranking officials and intelligence sources in Denmark, France and Germany.

The information has led to several political reactions, including from Siumut.

- Was a fair picture drawn?

The party believes that the case raises serious questions about the handling of the situation and the information that has been given to the Greenlandic population:

- What was previously presented as a military exercise now appears to be concrete and extensive preparations for a potential armed conflict. The deployment included, among other things, explosives and medical preparedness – elements that are normally associated with operational situations and not ordinary exercises.

- It is worrying that a situation of such great importance for Greenland's security has apparently been presented as less serious than it actually was, write the two parliamentary candidates Ineqi Kielsen and Ane Lone Bagger in a joint press release.

They believe that it is unclear whether the Greenlandic population has received a true picture of the situation:

- There is therefore a need for clarity: Who made the decision to describe the situation as an exercise? What did the Greenlandic government know – and when, ask the two politicians, who, if elected to the Folketing, will work for an impartial investigation of the process.

Chemnitz is pleased that action was taken

The soon-to-be former member of the Folketing Aaja Chemnitz (IA) has also commented on DR's article.

She believes that the information shows how serious the situation was just a few months ago. She expresses satisfaction that soldiers were sent to Greenland and that preparedness was initiated:

- Based on a recognition that the defense has a task to look after Greenland, and that more exercises were needed in the Arctic.

- I was happy that the government listened and acted promptly, writes Aaja Chemnitz in a post on Facebook.
