- The one hour means a lot

Young people have become more active in winter, now that it gets dark later, says Morten Jørgen Heilmann. Therefore, he does not want Greenland to move the time zone again.

Morten Jørgen Heilmann is a mountain bike coach and has previously coached in, among other things, cross-country skiing.

Sunday until midnight this coming weekend we have to set the clock back one hour. And that meant for many years that it became too dark to play sports outdoors the afternoon.

But two years ago, the majority of Greenland moved time zone to UTC -2, which means that it is now darker in the morning and lighter in the evening the afternoon.

And it has been a huge gain for the sporting world, says Morten Jørgen Heilmann, who has trained everything from cycling to cross-country skiing.

- It's like cross-country skiing, which is a technical sport, where you need balance, it's definitely easier to keep your balance when you feel like it compared to dark, he says.

But if it's up to Naleraq and Siumut, Greenland will move again time zone back to UTC -3, which will mean it gets dark earlier in the afternoon in the winter.

And even if it's just a single hour, it would be very unfortunate, says Morten Jørgen Heilmann.

- The one hour means an enormous amount, because in that one hour do we have more light, he says.

Young people have become more active

The location of the light hours is most important in winter, where there are so few of them. And in recent years, Morten Jørgen Heilmann has been able to easily see a positive development, both at home and at work.

His own children have started playing more outside in the snow after school in the winter, where they used to come straight home because it had gotten dark.

Morten Jørgen Heilmann is the founder and managing director director of Pikkori Sport, an outdoor store in Nuuk, and this is where the interest comes from young customers increased in the winter.

- It is quite clear to see that the young people have been more active the last two winters.

- They come in and look at equipment that they can use outdoors. So we have clearly seen how much more the young people want to be active, he says.

One more hour to shop

There are many arguments for and against keeping the current one time zone. On the one hand, many have had difficulty getting used to the sun get up later.

On the other hand, we are now an hour "closer" to Europe, which is especially an advantage in business.

And Pikkori Sport has benefited from that.

Because Europe is ahead of Greenland in terms of time, they go earlier home from work, which reduces the time to trade with Europe.

- We have got one more hour, and that is of great importance, because even though I do a lot of shopping abroad, there are still quite a few of them correspondences I have are via Europe, says Morten Jørgen Heilmann.

He hopes that the politicians in Inatsisartut choose to keep the current time zone UTC -2.

On October 14, Inatsisartut discussed the proposal to move the time zone. All parties were positive about the idea, and the proposal was sent on to the Law Committee. On November 6, they will debate the topic again.
