The necessary approvals are now in place for Qaqortoq's airport to receive flights from Thursday morning.
The Norwegian Transport Authority announced late Wednesday evening that security is in order at Qaqortoq's regional airport, which can now receive flights as scheduled from Thursday morning. The first flight is expected from Nuuk at around 9:00 a.m.
– After thorough inspections and a final test flight, we have approved that the airport meets the necessary level of security. This applies to both the new security check, digital flight information service and 1,500-meter runway, says the Norwegian Transport Authority's deputy director, Lars Korsholm.
Just like in Nuuk in November 2024, there will be some conditions attached to the approval.
– This means, for example, that for a period of time only Air Greenland will be able to use the airport for scheduled traffic and that air traffic will be limited to a maximum of two flights per hour, the Norwegian Transport Authority explains.
– Our inspection teams will follow up on the fact that the airport in Qaqortoq has implemented the measures that we have required in our approval before the restrictions can be relaxed, says Deputy Director Lars Korsholm.
According to the Norwegian Transport Authority, Icelandair cannot start flying to Qaqortoq with the airport's current status. However, Greenland Airports still has time to take this into account, as Icelandair will not start its flights to Qaqortoq until June.
The restriction on Air Greenland is reminiscent of the conditions that applied to the new Nuuk Airport after its opening in November 2024.
At that time, there was talk of restricting flights for others than Air Greenland and Icelandair. However, it was still possible to obtain an exemption for individual flights.
