After a winter marked by a lack of snow, waiting and disappointments, it is long-awaited news that you can once again strap on your skis and take a trip down the mountain.
For many in Nuuk Sisorarfiit is not just a place to ski – it is a gathering point where winter life usually unfolds with families, friends and outdoor enthusiasts side by side. Therefore, it is not difficult to understand the excitement of operation manager Qulu Heilmann, who can finally welcome guests again.
– Finally the ski lift opens for season 25/26. It has never happened before that the lift opens so late. As everyone knows, we have had a lack of snow this year, and this has affected skiing and winter life at Sisorarfiit, which is otherwise a regular meeting place in winter for families, skiers and hikers, he says.
Hard work behind the opening
That the lift will open at all is far from a given this year. Behind the scenes, many hours of work are being put into creating a minimum of piste.
– It is with great joy that we can finally open the lift. However, only the small lift will be running. The snow on the small lift has been brought in and plowed up – we have spent many machine hours on it. You can now ride on the piste, although the piste is both narrow and thin, explains Qulu Heilmann.
This also means that you as a guest must be aware and take precautions. The conditions are not like in the best winters, but the opportunities are there – and that is what counts.
More than just skiing
Although the slope by the small lift only extends over a little over 400 meters, the opening is important for another reason: It brings back life. The last few weekends have been limited activity, with the cafeteria being open, but without skiing, the atmosphere has been lacking.
– We have been open in the cafeteria for the last four weekends and closed on weekdays. Now we can finally be open on weekdays, as long as the lift is running. We are looking forward to meeting skiers again, whom we have missed all winter. We are also happy that there will be activity out here again. So come and say hello, he says with a smile on his face.
For many, it is as much about the community as the actual trips down the hill – about hot drinks, laughter and reunions after a long winter without the usual meeting point.
Small steps in a difficult winter
The prospects for the main lift to open are still uncertain. There is still a lack of snow in Quassussuaq, and the weather this year has been both mild and unstable. Nevertheless, today's opening is something special. Even though it is only a smaller lift and a short piste, it marks a turning point in an otherwise challenging season.
It may not be the winter many had hoped for. But it is a beginning. And in Nuuk, that is enough.
