Angutinnguaq Hegelund-Tittussen, head of Elite Sport Greenland, and Carsten Olsen, head of Timersoqatigiiffiit Assammik Arsartartut Kattuffiat, have entered into a three-year cooperation agreement to strengthen the development of handball in Greenland towards 2028.
The agreement covers both elite and talent levels as well as a targeted effort to develop national coaches.
The cooperation is intended to create a more stable framework for the national teams with more training sessions and a more predictable match schedule. The goal is to develop competitive A-national teams that can qualify for the world championships.
A central part of the agreement is the strengthening of talent development, where young players should increasingly gain international experience before reaching the senior level. This will be done through an increased activity level and a more ambitious training environment, which will ensure a clear path from youth to elite. In addition, the agreement also includes a focus on coach development, where the goal is to ensure national coaches with the necessary international licenses and competencies.
Angutinnguaq Hegelund-Tittussen points out that the collaboration is built on a solid strategic foundation:
- When signing the collaboration agreement, we have emphasized that the association works based on a multi-year strategy with a clear focus on strengthening the elite and developing a competitive national team with ambitious sporting goals. In addition, the association works purposefully with talent development and a clear pipeline from youth to senior. At the same time, we see clear plans for the development of the national team coaches' competencies and to strengthen international collaboration. This provides a solid foundation for the continued development of handball in Greenland, he states in a press release issued by Elite Sport Greenland and Timersoqatigiiffiit Assammik Arsartartut Kattuffiat.
Carsten Olsen calls the agreement both ambitious and necessary:
- We see the agreement with Elite Sport Greenland as both ambitious and important for the continued development of handball in Greenland. At TAAK, we are pleased that Elite Sport Greenland recognizes the ambitious work we have initiated with our strategy, which was launched at the beginning of 2025. The agreement creates a strong foundation for lifting both elite and talent development in the coming years. At the same time, we stand together to focus on the fact that elite sports in Greenland need a significantly better framework, which must be created from a political perspective, if we are to truly fulfill our international ambitions and strengthen Greenland's position as a strong sports nation, Carsten states in the same press release.
With the agreement, the parties set a common direction for the coming years, where the ambition is to raise the level of Greenlandic handball and create better conditions for competing internationally.
