Should Greenland move its time zone again? Politicians in Inatsisartut will discuss this on Tuesday.
Both Siumut and Naleraq have proposed moving the standard time zone in Greenland back to UTC-3 and abolishing daylight saving time.
The items were supposed to be finalized at the autumn session 2025, but the second reading was pushed to the winter session – which was then postponed due to the extensive work of dealing with the USA situation.
Therefore, the proposals are now back on the agenda for the spring session, which starts on Tuesday, April 14. First, Siumut's proposal will be discussed, which would have both moved the standard time zone in Greenland to UTC-3 and abolished daylight saving time.
On Wednesday, Inatsisartut will consider Naleraq's proposal, which proposes the same changes as Siumut.
Three years ago, the clock was moved forward one hour in most of Greenland, so that it changed from UTC-3 to UTC-2.
Agreed Inatsisartut has changed its mind
When Inatsisartut discussed the proposals in October 2025, they were sent for consideration by the Law Committee with support from all parties.
Although Naalakkersuisut will still wait to abolish daylight saving time until the EU does so. This was already decided in 2019.
When the decision to move the time zone was not made until 2022, it was otherwise a unanimous Inatsisartut that voted in favor, which Chairman of Naalakkersuisut Jens-Frederik Nielsen (D) also pointed out during the debate in October 2025:
- Inatsisartut determined the time zone by consensus, but despite our agreement at the time, there are now divided opinions on determining the time zone, which is also reflected in the two proposals presented. There are both citizens and business actors who describe different needs and preferences, said Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
There were a large number of consultation responses to the proposals. Among others, Air Greenland has been enthusiastic about the current time zone, as it opens up a lot of possibilities.
While an expert from Iceland argued to Sermitsiaq that it is healthiest for the circadian rhythm if you get up with the sun.
