The business community in Maniitsoq has had enough of the city's waste problems and wants to take action before it has even greater consequences for the environment, health, the city's appearance and future development.
That is why Clean City Project has been launched.
The Maniitsoq Business Association contacted Arctic Circle Business with the desire to create structure, action and long-term solutions to the city's waste challenges.
This is what Arctic Circle Business writes in a press release.
- If the waste problems are not handled now, the consequences will be serious. Accumulation of waste burdens nature, degrades the urban environment, increases the risk of pollution and sends a negative signal to citizens, visitors and potential investors. At the same time, future solutions will become both more expensive and more complex the longer we postpone action.
- Project Clean City is therefore not just a clean-up project – it is an investment in Maniitsoq's future, writes Arctic Circle Business.
The project marks an important shift
As a central part of the project, Arctic Circle Business has contacted HJHansen Recycling Group, one of the Northern Norway's leading companies within the recycling of iron and metal scrap.
HJHansen is now present in Maniitsoq and is assisting with a professional and thorough mapping of the extent of waste in the city. Among other things, they analyze the types of waste, assess the quantities and provide an estimate of how many containers will need to be transported out of the city in the future.
This is important knowledge for creating long-term solutions.
- The Clean City Project marks an important shift: the business community is now taking active responsibility for the environment and contributing to creating a more sustainable city. The collaboration between the Maniitsoq Business Association, Arctic Circle Business and international competences such as HJHansen Recycling Group shows that local initiatives combined with external expertise can create real change.
- This project is a clear signal that Maniitsoq wants to lead the way. Not only for the city's own future, but as an example for the rest of Greenland, writes Arctic Circle Business.
They conclude by stating that the project can form the basis for future initiatives in other parts of the country.
